Real Life Kitchens – Mr & Mrs Hodgson’s Bright, Modern Space

When Mr & Mrs Hodgson moved in to their new quaint cottage, they wanted to renovate the kitchen to put their own stamp on the space, making it the heart of the home.

We interviewed Life expert designer, Daniela, to discuss the project...

Daniela, could you tell us a little bit about the client's property?

"Mr & Mrs Hodgson's home is a quaint cottage located in the beautiful North Yorkshire town of Harrogate.

"The couple had just moved into the property when they came to us, so their aim with this renovation was to put their own stamp on the kitchen, making it the heart of the home and a space they would love for years to come."

What were the main requests the client had for her kitchen design?

"In terms of design, the clients' main request was that the space be bright and modern. So, we opted for our contemporary Capita slab door with a handleless trim for a truly sleek look. A calming colour palette of Matt White and Dove Grey help to make the room feel spacious and welcoming, whilst the contrasting Matt Graphite handleless trim is an eye-catching element that brings depth to the design."

"However, we would have to argue that the real focal point of the space is the waterfall peninsular, using the delicate yet detailed White Venato Quartz worksurface, which is continued throughout the kitchen as a worktop and as a beautiful splashback. It really helps capture the light of the room."

What were the client's practical requirements?

"When it came to practicalities of the kitchen, it was important to Mr & Mrs Hodgson that no space was wasted in the compact room. We focused on utilising the space available, choosing to design full-height units to increase cupboard surface area, and installing clever storage solutions, such as the Kesseböhmer Pull-Out unit and Tandem Larder."

"A full-size dishwasher, washer-dryer, full-height refrigerator and an undercounter freezer were also included in the design, integrated into units for a smooth, uncluttered look."

Do you have any advice to give those who are planning a kitchen with a similar space?

"When designing a smaller space think carefully about the colours you use.

"In this particular project, we used light cabinet doors with a light worktop to make the kitchen feel more spacious and emphasise the room's natural light."
